BMX Drivetrains
The BMX drivetrain is elegantly simple: one chainring, one chain, one rear sprocket, fixed gear ratio. Every component in the chain — cranks, chainring, chain, bottom bracket — exists to transfer your leg power to the rear wheel as efficiently as possible. Stiffness and weight are the two variables that matter; anything that flexes under load loses power, and anything that spins with the wheel adds rotational resistance.
The upgrade path runs from square taper 3-piece (entry level, durable, easy to service) through 2-piece splined (24mm chromoly spindle, significantly stiffer under load) to hollow forged 2-piece (race standard, lightest and stiffest). Choose based on your rider's class and the power they're generating — Expert class riders get real benefit from the 2-piece upgrade; Mini and Junior class riders don't need it yet.
